20 Standards (Quartet) 2003 (Leo): This could open Braxton up to a lot of people -- tunes we all know getting tribute and transformation.

w/ Max Roach: Two in One – One in Two (hatOLOGY): Expansive, high-level improvisation from two guys with the tradition at their fingertips.

Saxophone Improvisations Series F (America) : Braxton solo is still the best way to get into his compositional world and understand his many-sided foundation in jazz, improv and 20th century composition.

Fans of Creative Orchestra Music 1976 (Arista) must track down Creative Orchestra (Köln) 1978 (hatART). Might be easier said than done, however, as it's been OOP for a while and doesn't (yet) appear in the hatOLOGY reissue queue. (Thankfully, Willisau (Quartet) 1991 is in queue.)

Thanks for the Braxton posts. It has got me listening to him again and you can't ask for more. For those wanting cheap legal downloads amazon.com has one of the 40 minute tracks from Coventry 1985 for $0.99. As to what got me hooked on Braxton it was, like others, Creative Orchestra Music ‘76. I wish I could buy it (again) without having to buy the big box.

The latest Braxton tune from the Antilles record reminds me what a great label that was - have these ever been issued on CD? I seem to remember a cracking disk from Joanne Brackeen - perhaps someone could put a tune from that on the site if they have it?

I like the Charlie Parker Project 1993 (HatOLOGY) and Circle--Paris Concert (1972). Eight (+3) Tristano Compositions 1989 for Warne Marsh is also enjoyable.

One of the great archways that introduced me to Braxton's music was Creative Orchestra Music '76, a huge banquet with unbelievable range, musicianship and damned catchy compositions. I still sometimes hear the bass trombone riffs from the jazz-inflected pieces from that album. Another entry way was Braxton's contrabass clarinet version of Ornithology on the In The Tradition album with Tootie Heath, Tete Montoliu and NHOP.

It took me several years to get closer to For Trio and a wide variety of other Braxton work. I couldn't listen to Circle because I had a terrible prejudice against Corea and Altschul.

This blog-a-thon has been spectacular. I think it adds up to more than two hours of some of the finest music ever made. Many thanks.
