Great post! I missed it the first time around. Glad to see you tied in Coming Through Slaughter. Historical fiction, prose poetry - whatever you want to call it, it's a great book.

The lyrics to "Buddy Bolden's Blues" become a little less cryptic when you think about its alternate title "Funky Butt" and realize that it was supposedly about flatulence in a crowded dancehall, but I like the fact that it supports a more mysterious reading, too.

Excellent little essay and glad you reposted! Your archives are deeep and may not have found this one otherwise. Bolden, Joplin, Threadgill and the concept of Art & Cheez being non-exclusive propositions? Beautiful!

Nice piece. Don't forget about Air's bassist, Fred Hopkins, though: he added a lot of weight to the sound of the band.

Air's 'Buddy Bolden Blues' still brings goose bumps after 25 years of listening, especially Fred Hopkin's bass solo.

As for winding down of the tune, it's like Bobby Bolden's playing... never recorded, it just evaporated into the ether...

Don't forget Kip Hanrahan's version on "All Roads Are Made of The Flesh". Not Jelly Roll, and not mind blowingly avante-yet-traditional like Air, a little more like a showtune, but still a great rendition of a great song.
