i bought the original lp issue on survival sr101 when it was first issued.
it created quite a stir at the time.
i have followed rashied ali's recordings ever since and apart from the coltrane duos, this first record is fixed in my memory....

Fabulous stuff. Some other great duets, astoundingly cheap on Amazon: In Willisau, Blackwell/Redman; and Something In Return, and Burnt Offering, Cyrille/Lyons.

Sorry about that, John; you're exactly right. There are too many albums/songs with Trane's name in them. I have it in my collection, but I was going on memory while writing that comment--not too smart. It's still one of the best avant-garde CDs out there, though, even if I can't remember the name of it.

The correct title of the Charles Gayle album is Touchin' On Trane.

Thanks guys for giving Ali a proper eulogy. I was offended to see Les Paul in every newspaper obituary (nothing against Les, mind you, he is worth recognition for his great achievements) and no obit for Ali in most, with the New York Times being one notable exception. We've lost another tremendous musician, and most of the world doesn't even know it. For additional mind-blowing examples of Ali's work, get a copy of Charles Gayle's "Chasin' the Trane" or Ivo Perelman's "Sad Life". The man had a way with rhythm.

As a master of collaboration it is easy to overlook Rashid's achievements, I tend to file all the CDs you draw from here under his collaborator's names. Grouping these all together really shines a welcome highlight on the depth of his talent. SWIFT ARE THE WINDS OF LIFE is usually the disc I'd throw on to introduce someone to Jenkins, which is really driven by Ali's understanding of the genius of that beloved violinist. Sad; I've really enjoyed seeming him live in recent years as well.

Thanks much for this! The 2004 marathon duo with Sonny Fortune streaming at WBGO (http://www.wbgo.org/blog/?p=2043) serves as an excellent postscript to your selections.
