That's an excellent point about South American / jazz fusion crossovers. I wonder if folks are more familiar with the slicker work from these groups and forget about the woolly and more adventurous early sides? Doug W's Kozmigroov list offers some good leads, though this music is still awaiting a full-scale reconsideration. Personally I find there are killer tracks here and there, but whole albums rarely hit the mark. But maybe I've missed some of the best? I'd totally overlooked the South American numbers on that Shepp record for instance.

The rest of the album isn't quite as fucked, but it's still fascinating. Curious what you'd make of it.

not sure about the musical organisation of the tracks - seems like rather too many ideas strung-together with rather abrupt transitions (excess - not necessarily in a good way - as opposed to the introverted minimalism of those gorgeous miles davis tracks). but, on the other hand, some of the textures and musical ideas are rather lovely.

reading this post, it struck me that there was a bit of a progressive jazz fusion/south american crossover at this point which no seems to comment on - we know all about the uses of african and indian musics but you also have projects like return to forever (the original band with airto and flora purim), dom un romao featuring in the original weather report, milton nascimento playing with wayne shorter & doing some jazz albums himself, jobim's orchestral records on cti, etc etc. even archie shepp had a few south american-tinged numbers tucked away on the (rather laid-back & mellow) album 'there's a trumpet in my soul'

I like the way the strings seem to mimic Brazilian percussion toward the end of the first clip (Velorio) and I love the texture of the Rhodes against some of the other elements, but overall, to me, the music is diffuse and unsatisfying. And there's a really jarring splice during Guizos. There's a video I can't seem to find of him going totally Rahsaan-like crazy on percussion and keyboards and others where he plays soprano. My favorite, though, features him with a group playing percussion patterns on the surface of the water in a beautiful river or lake.
